We offer this quite special Mücke-Melder Bauhaus desk, manufactured in the 1930s and in original condition. Its well-preserved state, with only light signs of age and use, lends it a particularly charming appeal.

Most tubular steel desks produced by Mücke-Melder were offered in veneered and wood-stained finishes. This black lacquered version, however, represents a rare and sought-after variation.

Based in the Czechoslovakian town of Fryštát, Mücke-Melder was one of the foremost producers of tubular steel furniture during the pre-war modernist period. Employing approximately 600 workers, the company began producing furniture in the style of classical modernism as early as the late 1920s.

In 1928, Mücke-Melder collaborated with Thonet to produce the cantilever chair designed by French architect and designer André Lurçat. Due to the high demand for Bauhaus and functionalist modernist furniture in Czechoslovakia at the time, Mücke-Melder entered into a fruitful partnership with Thonet-Mundus AG. This collaboration allowed the company to produce furniture based on the designs of internationally renowned architects and designers, including Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam, and the Luckhardt brothers. Additionally, the company realized designs by local designers such as Arnošt Beck.

This desk combines the clean lines of the Bauhaus aesthetic with a rare and high-quality execution, making it a unique collector’s piece.
