Designed in the early 1930s by Karl Trabert for the Frankfurt lighting manufacturer Schanzenbach & Co., this Model 8621 table lamp represents the Bauhaus-influenced German Modernism of the interwar period, where function, material and construction were combined into a coherent design concept.
A defining feature is the two-part shade consisting of aluminium and opal glass. The opal diffuser provides soft, glare-free illumination, while the metal shade directs the light and gives the lamp its distinctive appearance. Thanks to the adjustable joint at the base, the lamp can be tilted and positioned according to different lighting needs, making it suitable as a desk, reading or task lamp.
Karl Trabert belongs to a generation of designers who helped shape modern German lighting design during the 1920s and 1930s. Related designs by Trabert can today be found in international museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Schanzenbach & Co. was among the important German lighting manufacturers of the period, supplying modern lighting solutions for offices, public buildings, architectural projects and sophisticated residential interiors.
