This sideboard was designed by Arne Vodder and manufactured by P. Olsen Sibast in Stenstrup, Denmark. Dating from around 1960, the design combines the clean lines of Danish Modern furniture with a functional interior layout and a distinctive use of colour.
The cabinet is finished in rosewood veneer and stands on four tapered wooden legs. The front features drawers with concave recessed handles, a reversible sliding door with one yellow side and one rosewood-veneered side, and a drop-front compartment. The drawer fronts in white, yellow, blue and black contrast with the dark, richly grained rosewood surface. The drop-front compartment has a light wood interior.
Of particular note is the well-preserved, largely untouched original condition. The original finish and colour scheme have been retained, preserving the character of the design. The sideboard comes from a private collection in Berlin.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was one of Denmark’s leading furniture designers of the postwar period. His designs combine functional construction with carefully proportioned forms and a considered use of colour and natural materials. Sibast Møbler was an important manufacturing partner for his furniture designs.
Rosewood was frequently used in Scandinavian furniture design during the 1950s and 1960s for its distinctive grain and warm, dark colour. In this design, the veneer is balanced by the coloured fronts and the restrained form of the cabinet.
