This tubular steel daybed is based on a design by Austrian architect Franz Singer, created around 1930.
The construction follows a clearly functional idea: an integrated folding mechanism allows the seating surface to be extended, transforming the piece from a couch into a daybed. In both positions, the structure remains visible and reduced to its essential elements. The laterally guided tubular steel frame and the continuous line of the backrest define the overall appearance.
Franz Singer studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar under Johannes Itten and later collaborated with Friedl Dicker. He is considered one of the defining designers within the architectural avant-garde of this period.
The frame is made of chrome-plated tubular steel and remains in very good original condition. The upholstery has been renewed and finished in oxblood red leather, further emphasizing the horizontal structure of the design.
Furniture of this kind reflects the functional approach of Bauhaus modernism. The combination of movable construction and reduced form defines the character of this piece.
