The H237 armchair by Jindřich Halabala was created in the early 1930s for UP Brno and represents one of the defining seating designs of Czechoslovak Modernism. Its characteristic silhouette brings together the functional design language of the period with the representative elegance of Art Deco. The model H-237 already shows the compact elegance that would later shape the idea of the “cocktail chair”.
The curved wooden armrests give the piece a flowing, almost sculptural line. The vertically structured upholstery adds a quiet rhythm to the surfaces and clearly separates seat and back. In this balance of movement and geometry, Halabala demonstrates how modern living comfort can be expressed through disciplined form. The design also reflects Halabala’s sensitivity to the aesthetic shift across the pre- and post-war period and his proximity to the international avant-garde.
This example has been restored with great care. The traditional horsehair upholstery has been rebuilt, and the fabric was selected to reflect the material character and visual language of the 1930s.
A historic armchair that brings the spirit of Czechoslovak Modernism into the present with lasting everyday usability.
