This original wardrobe by Rudolf Vichr dates from the early 1930s and represents a characteristic example of the Classical Modernist movement in Czechoslovakia. Manufactured in Prague by Vichr A. Spol., it reflects the design culture of the interwar period, where functional clarity and a defined visual order became central aspects of furniture design.
The exterior pairs a calm reseda-green surface with a surrounding frame of chromed steel, emphasizing the constructive idea of the piece. At the centre of the composition are the distinctive door handles – sculptural, symmetrical and intentionally avant-garde in their presence. They extend the functional purpose of a handle into a subtle architectural gesture.
Inside, the design continues with the same structural logic. Warmly toned wood surfaces, a clothes rail and a storage shelf underline the practical intention of the furniture while maintaining a crafted quality.
The original painted finish has been preserved, giving the wardrobe an authentic historical character. Surfaces show age-related traces consistent with more than nine decades of use and contribute to its historical depth rather than diminishing it.
Furniture by Rudolf Vichr is regarded today as an important chapter in Czechoslovak design history, documenting the transition from artisanal production to industrial furniture manufacturing — a defining concern of European Modernism.
