This cantilever armchair, model H-128, was designed around 1934 by the Czechoslovak architect and designer Jindřich Halabala and produced by the furniture manufacturer UP Závody in Brno. Jindřich Halabala was the chief designer at the Brno-based furniture manufacturer UP Závody, and his extensive portfolio of outstanding designs in the Bauhaus and functionalist modernist styles is widely recognized.
Unlike Halabala’s later upholstered models, this early design features a reduced, functional aesthetic with clear lines – inspired by the principles of Bauhaus modernism.
The armrests and the slightly reclined backrest are made of bent plywood, oak-veneered and finished with a glossy lacquer. Together with the curved seat, they form a visually unified structure.
The cantilever frame is made of tubular steel with a brass-coated surface, which gives this rare version a solid yet flowing presence.
This example dates from the early production phase of the 1930s and stands out for its well-preserved original materials. It is a strong representation of Czechoslovak functionalism from that period.
This chair pairs perfectly with the matching Halabala desk:
