This avant-garde cantilever chair, model H-138, was designed around 1934 by Jindřich Halabala and manufactured by UP Závody in Brno, Czechoslovakia. It reflects the spirit of Functionalism, combining a bent tubular steel frame with the warmth of oak-veneered plywood.
Unlike Halabala’s more widely known lounge chairs, the H-138 presents a more minimalistic and industrial aesthetic – ideally suited for modern interiors or curated design collections. The bentwood elements retain their warm tone and elegant curvature, while the chrome-plated frame creates a clear, floating silhouette in the spirit of Bauhaus modernism.
An identical example is part of the permanent design collection of the museum “Die Neue Sammlung” in Munich. This piece is preserved in outstanding original, museum-quality condition and offers a rare opportunity for collectors of early Czechoslovak modernism.
