Bauhaus cantilever armchair “Famos 21” with stool by Mücke-Melder – 1930s

This seating group was designed and manufactured by Mücke-Melder in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s. It comprises two Famos 21 armchairs and the accompanying stool.

The sweeping curves of the chrome-plated tubular-steel frames give the armchairs their distinctive form, shaped by the streamlined design language of the period. Dark-stained beechwood armrests provide a warm contrast to the metal.

The seating group was reupholstered several years ago using traditional sprung upholstery and covered in a geometrically patterned fabric by Backhausen. Its small-scale pattern in beige, brown and black reflects the visual language of Viennese Modernism and harmonises remarkably well with the design.

The upholstery is in very good condition and ready for use. The tubular-steel frames and wooden armrests show age-related signs of wear that reflect the history of the seating group.
